Smoking Can Lead To Arthritis And Can Make It Worse

The link between smoking and  arthritis is well established. Studies have linked smoking to development of rheumatoid arthritis and to worse outcomes in people who develop it.

According to a Swedish study, presented at the 2009 annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology, researchers found that smoking increased the risk of a person developing rheumatoid arthritis.

Many studies have indicated that people with RA who smoke tend not to respond as well to conventional treatment options.  For example, a 2011 study  in Sweden released in Arthritis & Rheumatism found that smokers were 50 percent less likely to respond well to treatment of the condition than nonsmokers.

Without getting two scientific, the studies show that people with a specific gene variation, called HLA-DRB1, who are smokers are more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis than non-smokers.  In addition, smokers with this variation, have worse symptoms and suffer more from the disease.

Smoking is bad, and we have all heard about it causing things like COPD and cancer.  Add Rheumatoid Arthritis to the list and you can see how quitting is the best think you can do for your self and your family.  Nicotine gum can help you quit and nicotine gum coupons can save you money.  Start quitting today.

Maryland To Consider A Second Hand Smoke Bill

Maryland delegate Ben Kramer has introduced a bill in Annapolis Maryland that would make second hand smoke qualify as a nuisance in apartments, town homes and condominiums.

Many people are familiar with nuisance laws that control noise.  I personally in my reckless college days was cited for noise violation by the police after a sleepy neighbor called the police.

The bill in Maryland would extend the definition of nuisance to include second hand smoke.  It would make it easier to bring charges against neighbors who smoke and allow the second hand smoke to penetrate the living space of a non-smoker.

While the bill would not outlaw smoking in these types of dwellings, opponents say that it effectively would.  California has a similar law in place.

Proponents point out that if you want to kill yourself with cigarette smoke that is one thing but to do it to your neighbors in their own homes is another.  The writing is on the wall.  Smokers are facing daily challenges to their right to smoke.  It is my belief that it is a matter of time before smoking in most places, including your home will be outlawed.  Now is a good time to find some nicotine gum coupons and start quitting on your own schedule before you don’t have a choice!

If You Need More Evidence That Second Hand Smoke Is Bad, Here It Is

It is common knowledge that second hand smoke can hurt those around you.  Everyone from you children or spouse to your co workers and friends are effected when you light up a cigarette.  Second hand smoke can lead to devastating illness and death or simply contribute to relatively minor maladies like asthma.

A recent study out of The University Of Texas Health Science Center that was published in the American Journal Of Transplantation found that second hand smoke can cause or contribute to the rejection of transplant organs weeks or months after the transplant.

The study looked at graft transplants on mice and found that those mice exposed to second hand smoke had a higher rejection rate than those who were not exposed.  The study authors concluded that the second hand smoke suppressed enzymes that the graft transplant produced to aid their survival.

This lead to the belief that the immune function plays a part in a successful transplant and second hand smoke suppresses the immune function.

Hopefully most of us will never have the need for a transplant nor will our family members or friends, but this study does go to show that second hand smoke could have many dangers we may not yet be aware of and that second hand smoke is so bad it can cause a transplant rejection.  Is this the type of thing you want to be exposing your family and friends to?

Do yourself a favor and your family a favor and the rest of the world a favor and find some nicotine gum coupons and start to quit smoking today.

Brown Researches Find New Dangers In Nicotine: Should I Use Nicotine Gum?

When you smoke, it is well known that the smoke itself is causing great harm to your body.  It is also well known that the addictive agent in cigarettes is nicotine.  What is less known is the actual danger of nicotine itself to your body, other than its addictive nature.

Now researchers at Brown University may have shed some light on the health dangers of nicotine itself.

The research is in depth regarding the mechanism by which nicotine damages blood vessels and alters their form and integrity. In layman’s terms, the researchers have found that nicotine changes the smooth lining of blood vessels which make it easier for fatty artery clogging deposits to attach to the walls of the blood vessels.

The conclusion is that it may not be the smoke that is the only thing causing heart disease but may also be the nicotine.

This seems like bad news for products like nicotine gum, and many articles and groups are hyping the dangers of nicotine replacement therapy because of this finding.  What most neglect to point out is that nicotine gum is a means to an end.  The end of smoking and the end of addiction to nicotine.  Yes, nicotine may not be good for you but if you are able to quit using nicotine by chewing nicotine gum for 8-12 weeks, is that not better than forgoing the effort because nicotine is bad for you?

When reading any study it is important to look at the big picture.  Using nicotine gum to quit smoking and beat the addiction to nicotine is better than continuing to smoke.  Using nicotine gum coupons to save a little money by doing so is twice as smart.

Addiction Incorporated: A Film That Will Make You Understand Why It Is So Hard To Quit Smoking

Anyone that has tried and failed or tried and succeed to quit smoking or to quit chewing tobacco will tell you that it is one of the hardest things to do.  And in case you thought you were especially vulnerable to the effects of nicotine here is some good news for you:  Nicotine one of the most addictive drugs on the planet and there are people and companies out there who make it even harder to quit, on purpose.  At least that is the subject of a film called Addiction Incorporated.

The film chronicles the work of Victor DeNoble, a scientist hired by a large tobacco company to develop a less harmful cigarette.  Instead his research concluded that nicotine was addictive and that there were additives that could make the inherent nicotine in tobacco more addictive.  According to the movie, these findings were suppressed and the scientists were fired and the large tobacco company instead used these findings to make their cigarettes more addictive.

His findings and  Congressional testimony by several tobacco executives led to uproar, resignations and the eventual signing of the Family Smoking Prevention And Tobacco Control Act.

This is a very well done film and will make you think twice about the cigarette you are inhaling.

Sometimes motivation is an issue for someone thinking of quitting smoking.  Movies like this might just be the motivation you need to realize that every time you light a cigarette you might just be a pawn in a multi-billion dollar industry play.  After watching the movie it is or home that you will get up from the sofa, find some nicotine gum coupons and start quitting immediately.

Using Nicotine Gum To Quit Chewing Tobacco

Chewing tobacco, also referred to as moist snuff, dip and chew, is often considered harder to quit than cigarettes.  The reason for this is the amount of nicotine that chewing tobacco delivers. Overtime a user of tobacco products creates a base line need for nicotine.  This baseline is the amount needed by each individual tobacco user to avoid the symptoms of withdrawal.  The more nicotine you use the higher the baseline you create.  Because of the large amounts of nicotine in chewing tobacco and the efficient delivery system (cheeks and gums are excellent receptors for nicotine) the baseline in chewers is often higher in people who use chewing tobacco.

Chewing tobacco has some advantages over cigarettes.  There are less chemicals and what chemicals are present are not heated or lit during the process of having a chew or dip.  But chewing tobacco does lead to cancer.  Oral and esophageal cancer rates are higher for users of chewing tobacco.  Stomach and pancreatic cancer rates also rise when you use chewing tobacco.  Not to mention the tooth decay, gum disease and overall gross oral problems associated with chewing tobacco.

Nicotine gum is an excellent choice when trying to quit chewing tobacco.  It is a better choice than the nicotine patch for two reasons.  First, you can take a little more nicotine by chewing pieces closer together.  This is especially helpful early on in the treatment and helps chewing tobacco users because they are used to a higher level of nicotine (their baseline is higher).  Second, the act of chewing and placing a chewed piece of gum in your cheek or between your lip and gum somewhat mimics the way chewing tobacco is used.  This allows the person trying to quit to continue to experience some of the psychological aspects of chewing tobacco and some of the routine associated with it while they are trying to quit.

If you want to quit chewing tobacco, and hopefully your do and you know you should, try nicotine gum and to save a little money, find some nicotine gum coupons to help you complete your journey to a smoke free life.

You Can Beat Cancer But The Treatment Can Be Just As Bad

Many younger smokers have a certain comfort level in cancer treatment that allows them to justify continuing smoking. More simply stated, they assume that by the time they get cancer there will be a cure or very effective treatment. It is hard to blame them for this belief, over the past twenty years there have been enormous advances made in the treatment of cancer and there is little signs that those advancements will slow down in the future.

Of course this belief is not relegated to the young only, but what most people do not realize is the cancer treatment or cures are not like taking a course of antibiotics. Cancer treatment is often painful, debilitating and sometimes deadly.

Lets take a look at a recent example that has been in the news. It was a story about a fifty two year old man diagnosed with colon cancer. As he was undergoing treatment his wife was pregnant with their baby daughter. His treatment was successful in eradicating the cancer and he was looking forward to the birth of his daughter.

One day as the birth of his daughter approached, he began having trouble breathing. He went to the emergency room where he was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis and given a week to live. Apparently the chemotherapy treatment for the cancer caused his sickness

His wife induced labor and he was able to hold his daughter for 45 minutes. He soon after slipped into a coma and died a few days later

This man beat cancer but the treatment killed him. The truth is that cancer treatment is no guarantee, it is hard on the body and it can maim or debilitate you and maybe even kill. It is always better to avoid cancer than to treat it. Instead of relying on the hope of a cure or better treatment, find some nicotine gum coupons and start quitting smoking today.

You Need Support To Quit Smoking

You are likely no stranger to the health effects of cigarette smoking, and deep down you know you should quit smoking.  If you have made attempts in the past to quit and failed, maybe you did not have the support you needed.

Everyone who has attempted to quit smoking realizes that it is very difficult to do alone. You need help to quit.  This can be nicotine gum and nicotine gum coupons but in truth one of the best stop smoking aids isn’t sold in any store. It is knowing that you are harming yourself and your friends and family and having friends and family there to help you quit.  Below are some tips to help you quit by getting the support you need.
1) Make Yourself Responsible to Someone You Respect Or Love
Quitting is often more difficult because you figure you can sneak in a cigarette without anyone knowing about it. Making yourself responsible to someone requires that you’re going to have to lie to that person or persons about your smoking. It’s one thing to sneak in a smoke, but quite another to tell an outright lie when someone asks if you’ve had a cigarette especially is that someone is a loved on or a respected friend. Choose someone who’ll ask you on a regular basis whether you’ve had a cigarette and ask them to do just that.  You want them to confront you with the possibility of having to tell a lie or disappoint them daily.

2) Talk To The People Who Nag You About Your Smoking
The last thing you need is someone nagging you about your smoking when you are trying to quit.  Your nerves are already on edge.  Instead, ask those people likely to nag you (i.e. a spouse or children or a parent) to work with you and be supportive.  Ask them to make inquiries and if you stumble, to tell you its alright and just get back on the horse.  Nagging will get them and you nowhere.  It is when you are quitting that they need to be understanding and supportive.

3) Everyone Has An Opinion Or Advice:  Be Careful What You Listen To
For some people cold turkey works and for others nicotine replacement therapy works and for others it is hypnosis.  The truth is that everyone is different and at the same time everyone thinks their method is best.  You probably have an idea what works for you so stick with it.  Listen to advice, but don’t take everything you hear at face value.

Support and understanding are important when trying to quit.  So is understanding that others are often just trying to help you quit.  Take it one day at a time and develop the support network that will allow you to reach your goal.

What Are The Side Effects Of Using Nicotine Gum

Using nicotine gum has some side effects.  Some of the side effects are bad for your health.  However, the side effects of smoking are many times worse and the fact that nicotine gum has some side effects should not deter you from quitting smoking.  It is worth discussing those some effects so that you are fully informed and can recognize what may be happening as you undertake your journey to a smoke free life.  Below are some of the common possible side effects of using nicotine gum.

Health Effects Of Nicotine

Nicotine constricts arteries, raises blood pressure and can damage arterial walls.  These are not effects of the gum but of the nicotine it delivers.  Because of the side effects of nicotine, users may be at a greater risk for heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure.  Additional effects nicotine may have on your health include peptic ulcers, acid reflux and poor circulation.

Muscle Control Issues

Nicotine gum has the effect of causing hiccups in some people or if too much saliva with nicotine in it is swallowed the sensation of the throat muscles closing may occur.  These are temporary effects that nicotine gum may cause.

Gum Disease

Prolonged use of nicotine gum may cause or contribute to gum disease.  Nicotine constricts the blood vessels in the body and the gums are not immune to this.  This constriction of blood vessels can lead to gum disease. Studies over a 15 week period of nicotine gum use have showed not correlation however.

Birth Defects

Women who use nicotine in any form during pregnancy have an increased risk of having babies with birth defects.

Though nicotine and nicotine gum carry some health risks and side effects, the risks of continuing smoking far outweigh the side effects of using nicotine gum.  Do yourself and your body a favor, find some nicotine gum coupons and start quitting.

“Quit Using Nicotine Gum After 12 Weeks”, Seriously?

Most nicotine gum manufacturers include the warning: “stop using nicotine gum after 12 weeks” in their packaging.  I am at a loss to figure out what good this warning brings, other than that the FDA mandates it.  Granted, nicotine is not good for you.  It has effects on your blood pressure and heart rate and may even effect the linings of your arteries which could possible lead to an increased risk of heart disease.  Apparently the government thinks that it is important enough to advise you to quit using nicotine gum after 12 weeks.  But what if you are not completely un-addicted to nicotine?  Should you go back to smoking?

Well, I am not a doctor and no advice I give here should be considered medical advice, nor do I claim to have the wisdom of the FDA, but common sense tells me that if you are not completely free of a nicotine addiction after 12 weeks, you are much better off sticking to the gum for a few more weeks than you are returning to the cigarettes.  What is this warning telling us?  Should we switch to smokeless tobacco after 12 weeks?

The Wall Street Journal ran a great article regarding this 12 week limit on the use of nicotine gum.  Click here for the article. Here is a quote from the ,article:

“There really doesn’t appear to be any great harm” with long-term use of NRT, says Mr. Cummings, chair of the department of health behavior in the cancer-prevention division at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y.. “You’re better off chewing gum or wearing a patch than smoking.”

Seriously.  We all know nicotine is not good for you but I challenge anyone to tell me that nicotine gum is worse than cigarettes.  Maybe its a case of CYA (cover your a#!) or maybe its just an all or nothing approach, but if your trying to quit smoking, and you just cannot do it in the 8-10 weeks most nicotine gum based programs call for and you need some more time, personally, I say stick with the gum rather than go back to the cigarettes.  If your going to chew it for that long you would do well find some nicotine gum coupons though.
